GETTING STARTED
Where can I find some project ideas?
- Start by perusing the list of active projects on the Project Cam homepage. Search by subject or browse all subjects on one page. Click the "detail" link next to each project to find more information about that project.
If you're interested in joining a project (or finding out more information from a project creator), click the "join" link and complete a quick application (which will then go to the project creator). Click here for more information about joining a project.
Even if a project is "full," you can still click on the "details" link; you may find that an existing project will spark an idea for your own. Click here for more information about creating a project.
- Check out how students used Project Cam to talk live with explorer Dr. Robert Ballard at the wreckage of the Titanic.
What are the hardware requirements?
- computer (updated to handle multimedia; either Mac or PC, connected to the internet via broadband) - webcam / digital video camera with Firewire - microphone (internal or external) - Flash 7 plug-in (download for free) - Browser recommendations
PC: Internet Explorer 6.0 and above Mac OS 9.0 or above: Internet Explorer 5.5 or above Mac OS X: Internet Explorer or Safari (We have heard from some Mac users that they have experienced software conflicts in both IE and Safari due to software configurations. To alleviate software conflicts, set up a new user account in OS X and login as this new user).

What do you recommend in terms of the kinds of webcams and microphones to use?
Webcam
- For the best video experience, use a digital video camera (Digi8 or mini-DV) with Firewire connection. Use a tripod to allow for stability and for smooth zooming capabilities.
- For a cheaper PC or Mac (OS 9) alternative, use Logitech's QuickZoom 400 camera (about $100).
- For a cheaper Mac/OS X alternative, use Apple's iSight (about $149).
Audio
- For a high-quality audio experience, use an external microphone connected to a mixing board.
- For a cheaper alternative, use an external microphone, such as Logitech® USB Desktop Microphone and plug it directly into your computer.
- For another alternative, purchase a webcam with a built-in microphone.
Approximately how much time does it take to set up a project? It will probably take you about 20 minutes to create or join a project. However, it may take up to 24 hours after you submit your application to receive approval. You will also want to consider the time it will take for you to set up your webcam and microphone.

MAKING THE BEST OF YOUR EXPERIENCE
Live video on the internet is pushing existing technology right to the edge. You are an early adopter and we're thrilled to have you with us on this exciting journey! We are providing the most robust venue possible at the moment, but please keep in mind that there are many variables beyond our control (traffic through your pipe and on the internet at large, for starters) that could affect Project Cam's performance.
Please contact us with any issues or questions not answered in the FAQ. And let us know of your successes and discoveries, too!
What are some helpful technical tips that I should consider in using Project Cam?
- Project Cam's audio times out after 35 minutes after logging in. To refresh audio, simply log off and log back in again.
- Never click on the "back" button, click "refresh," or click "My Project Cam Settings" while using live video; you will be disconnected. To properly leave a project, click "logout" at the bottom of the screen.
- Turn of microphone when the other side is speaking. To turn off your microphone, roll your mouse over your video window and click on the microphone icon. This will turn off your microphone.
- For a larger video window size,
- PC: Hold your mouse over one of the video windows, right-click, and select "Zoom In." Use the little hand to move the image around within the frame.
- Mac: Click and hold your mouse over one of the video windows and select "Zoom In." Use the little hand to move the image around within the frame.

What are things I should consider before my live event?
- Do lots of testing of the technology before the live event.
- For formal sessions, create a detailed schedule and script for the live session. (Remember to put a break in at 30 minutes to log out and log back in; the audio times out and stops working correctly at about 35 minutes into each session. If you login early to your session, you may want to consider moving up the break earlier in the schedule).
- While Project Cam is a very robust venue, please keep in mind that there are many variables beyond your control that could affect Project Cam's performance, such as traffic through your broadband pipe and on the internet at large.
- Assign different individuals to run the webcam/video camera and the microphone/audio system on each side of the project.
- Consider these video and audio tips.
Webcam/video camera: Remember to pan or zoom SLOWLY and SMOOTHLY. If you're using a video camera, consider putting it on a tripod to ensure smooth panning and zooming.
Microphone: To reduce echo during the session, turn OFF the microphone on the side that is not speaking.
- Consider how you might use the live chat and/or file sharing capabilities before and after live sessions to enhance the project experience. (If your project requires more project management/collaboration in between live sessions, consider using CLIC, Cable in the Classroom's virtual, anytime-anywhere workspace. Share files, messages, tasks & more – all in your own private space. Visit CLIC for more details).

TROUBLESHOOTING
I am logged in the project, but I'm unable to get my video and/or audio to work.
Here are a few recommendations of things to try:
Option #1 Make sure your webcam and/or microphone has been installed correctly. Check the manufacturer's directions.
Option #2 Check the Macromedia Flash settings. Make sure the correct webcam and/or audio device has been selected.
- PC: Hold your mouse over video window with the students, right-click, and select "Settings." To change the settings, select the appropriate icon at the bottom of the box.
- Mac: Hold down the control button and click and hold your mouse over video window with the students and select "Settings." To change the settings, select the appropriate icon at the bottom of the box.
Option #3 (FOR MAC OS X USERS) Set up a new user account in OS X and login as this new user. This may reduce software conflicts.
Option #4 If none of the options from above work, contact Jill Nyhus, Assistant Director of Technology.
I am logged in the project and my partner is, too, but we can't see each other. What should we do?
Each of you should do as follows. Logout of your project, clear your cache, close browser, open a new browser and log back in.
- PC: To clear your cache on a PC (in Internet Explorer), go to Tools>Internet Options, and hit "Delete files" and "Delete Cookies." Click "Ok."
- Mac: To clear your cache on a Mac (in Internet Explorer / Safari), hit "Reload."

My audio is choppy and also has significant delays. How do I fix that?
Live video on the internet is pushing existing technology right to the edge. You are an early adopter and we're thrilled to have you with us on this exciting journey! We are providing the most robust venue possible at the moment, but please keep in mind that there are many variables beyond our control (traffic through your pipe and on the internet at large, for starters) that could affect Project Cam's performance. However, here are some things you can check:
1. Check your Macromedia Flash audio settings to make sure you have selected the correct audio device. Consider deselecting "Reduce Echo" or changing volume scale. To check Macromedia Flash settings, do the following:
- PC: Hold your mouse over video window with the students, right-click, and select "Settings." Select the microphone icon at the bottom of the box and make sure the correct audio option has been selection.
- Mac: Hold down the control button and click and hold your mouse over video window with the students and select "Settings." Select the microphone icon at the bottom of the box and make sure the correct audio option has been selection.
2. Try disabling the microphone attached to your webcam and try using an external microphone.
3. Find out how much bandwidth your local network may be using at that moment. The less bandwidth that is available to your machine, the slower the audio (& video) will travel.
4. Turn your microphone OFF when your partner is speaking.
How do I make the video window larger?
- PC: Hold your mouse over video window with the students, right-click, and select "Zoom In." Use the little hand to move the image around within the frame.
- Mac: Hold down the control button and click and hold your mouse over video window with the students and select "Zoom In." Use the little hand to move the image around within the frame.
